Wolverine vs. Japan

The last movie I saw that was as funny as Baz Luhrmann's Australia was George Lucas' Revenge of the Sith.

I am waiting eagerly for your comments on Watchmen. And that movie based on a Dunsany story with Sam Neill in it. And, I hope The Combination makes it to Japan, to undo all the damage that other movie will have done to our tourist industry.

I'm looking forward to Watchmen, too. Sadly it doesn't open here for a few more weeks, but I've already penciled in the date and made plans with friends. Check out "Film Forensics" now as Andrew seems to have seen it already.

Sadly Australia was as bad as I was expecting after watching the preview. At least Mari could enjoy Hugh Jackman taking off his shirt, but about 20 minutes into it I turned to her and said, "This is the dumbest movie I've ever seen." And she replied, "Is it supposed to be a comedy?"

I thought it failed on every level. There was enough meat in the story to really sink their teeth into if they'd wanted to treat it seriously, but for the first half Baz thought he was still making Moulin Rouge, and Nicole confused historical drama as histrionic drama and just chewed the scenery. So it had a campy feel that completely jarred with both the stolen generation and attack on Darwin story lines.

And using CG was another misstep. Isn't one of the selling points of the film supposed to be the beautiful natural vistas of Australia? The cattle stampede, the big action set piece, has so much CG for the backgrounds I thought it must have been co-directed by George Lucas.

And then there's the magic realism... I guess Baz loves that genre, but I think that once the film crossed that line, it's hard to draw the audience back to feeling that this is a realistic period drama the could have happened rather than a tale of fantasy.

dr. clam, I know you saw Casino Royale, but did you see Quantum of Solace? Knowing your disdain for action, I recommend it because the action scenes are really quite short (the whole movie is short for a Bond picture) but they still drive the movie forward, show some aspect of Bond's character or are (check out the fight Night at the Opera scene) arty.

Gotcha, will make a point of seeing Quantum of Solace! After giving it some consideration, I think it probably has a less dumb name than most of the historic Bond novels, its just that we've grown up with them so we think they're normal. ;)
