Another Lost Weekend
Decided to see what this Lost craze is all about, and rented the first 3 DVDs. I enjoyed the 6 shows I saw. But the mystery of the island was too easily solved (minor spoilers):
Fact 1: They kill a polar bear on a tropical island.
Fact 2: If you're naughty, the island punishes you; if you're nice, you get something good.
Fact 3: It appears to be like Monster Island.
They have obviously stumbled upon Santa Claus' backdoor to Pellucidar. QED.
Also checked out X-Men: The Last Stand. Thoroughly enjoyed it. What I really liked was that even though I'd seen the preview, the movie retained a few surprises.
And like the also recently seen Superman Returns, I liked how X-Men: The Last Stand wasn't afraid to make big changes in the story.
Watch until after the credits.

hey - good to read from u again.
I've managed to miss the Lost craze here (Season 2 now over).
X3 was quite enjoyable.
Be interesting to see what direction they take Wolverine.
In an interesting Marvel move, Dominic Purcell (from Prison Break) is rumoured to be taking over Bruce Banner for The Incredible Hulk (2008).
I personally found Superman a bit 'dry'. Being a local product, it was a real 'spot the location' game...even Newcastle got a guernsey (can you pick it?), as well as local acting talent.
Marvel's new wave of releases over the next 2 years should be interesting:
Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage),
Iron Man (Jon Favreau directing), FF2 (Silver Surfer & Galactus).
Also apparently Watchmen is FINALLY going to get a guernsey for 2008...with Zack Snyder directing.
Speaking of Moore, have you seen V for Vendetta? I thought it an excellent contemporisation.
Am also really enjoying Doctor Who Season 2.
Hope we can catch up soon.
PS How's Mari?
Not to forget Spidey 3, with Venom, Sandman and Hobgoblin all rolled into one film - can it get any bigger????
Lost was interesting enough to keep me renting it.
I understand what you mean about Superman Returns. I always felt that I was someone watching a (really well made) movie. I never really engaged with the characters, even though I found them recogizable, and Supes himself quite "human" in his personal problems.
But I've felt that with Superman as a character anyway. His powers are just so great, that any problem he faces must be beyond my comprehension. Give me Batman's mano-2-mano fisticuffs anyday.
X-Men managed to avoid a distancing effect despite its large cast, and even though the climax is so BIG. This may be partly because X-Men is told at a quick pace, not giving the viewer much time to think about its nonsense; whereas Superman Returns is fairly leisurely.
Did you watch after the credits of X-Men?
Saw the Spidey preview. Looks great. I was sceptical about Ghost Rider, but some test audiences who were previewed with 20mins have given it a thumbs up - so who knows.
Looking forward to Fantastic Four 2, so long as it continues to keep its tongue in its cheek. The first one was just plain fun.
And of course there is Casino Royale... I watched the full preview, and am now trying to forget everything I've seen, because it looks so good that I don't want to ruin the experience of watching it.
I like Lost for a heap of reasons, but the main one is that it rewards patience, and respects its audience enough not to spoon feed it all the answers. But unlike Twin Peaks, it's obvious that the answers do actually already exist.
But I dunno about your analysis on point 2 - the poor old pilot didn't do nuthin' wrong, and he still got his arse kicked by the island. Sometimes I think the island is a bit of a bastard, actually.
The pilot is a red herring.
The truth is out there, and you've read it first here.
No, I didn't watch after the credits - my regular Newcastle movie going buddy always leaves beforehand. Guess I'll need to wait for the DVD.
you think the Lost island has Santa Claus's MO? I'm not quite sure about that... it appears that they have Santa Claus, though.
