That's Not On For Old Flashy

Enjoying Royal Flash, the 2nd book of the Flashman series. Great lashings of bawdy and poltroonish adventures for all, as the fictional Flashman is inserted into real world events. Another great lesson in European history.

It has given me a desire to become the Minister of Education, and replace all history textbooks with the Flashman series. Japan thinks it has a history textbook problem now. Wait'll they get a load of me.

Hmmm. Methinks the books would work equal wonders in the moral instruction classes.

I Love Unicorns

I’ve never seen a Unicorn, but that’s ok because I know that Unicorns can’t be seen by just anyone. It’s written that you have to be a pure maiden standing in the light of a harvest moon in the deepest part of an old forest. That’s the reason why you don’t see them anymore. All the stories about Unicorns come to us from long, long ago. Some people say that the stories about Unicorns aren’t "True". But I know that something doesn’t have to be “True” to be Right. That’s one thing for certain.

So I know that there’s no what you’d call court-room proof that Unicorns exist. But when you can read about Unicorns, and all the great things they’ve done, and continue to do, to doubt their existence makes no sense. And it makes us smaller to ignore what the Unicorns have to say. The universe becomes a bigger place, and so does your place in it, when you know that there is more to life than what is “True”.

Like for instance the story that we’re created from a drop of Serpent’s blood when a Unicorn pierced its black heart. The Unicorn took the spilled blood and formed it into one of us. That’s why we’re both good and bad. Although we were made by a Unicorn, we came from something bad. While the wickedness of that Serpent will always be inside us, that doesn’t mean we can’t keep trying to be like the Unicorn that made us.

Now some say that that is just a metaphor, or a simile, or an allegory or some such. But I think that which ever way it’s cut your going to be left with a piece of what’s Right. Then there are others which try to make Unicorns out to be normal creatures. They say that Unicorns were originally just oxen that were mistaken as something unearthly. And over the years these mistakes have been perpetuated in the writings about Unicorns. Well that’s their fantasy, and not mine.

And still there are these people that make up all kinds of spooldrangled explanations about why Unicorns can’t exist. Like how it must be impossible for Unicorns to have done the wonderful things you can read about them. They point to the fact that Unicorns have never been seen. They also say that it’s convenient for Unicorns that there are all these loopholes for why Unicorns are never seen. They reckon that it’s a copout for some Unicorn believers to say that the maiden wasn’t pure enough (whatever that means), or the forest wasn’t deep enough. But I say that they can’t see that that is precisely the point. Just because you can’t see something, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Unicorns are pure and noble creatures. Whenever I’ve been in a tight spot in my life, I’ve always thought about what a Unicorn would do in the same situation. I’ve found this has brought me great comfort. And because Unicorns aren’t dispassionate creatures, they have taken a subtle interest in the affairs of Man. They want to help you to help yourself. When something good happens to you, it’s often because a Unicorn has been watching over you; when something bad happens, it's because you’ve ignored the Unicorns.

So fellow Unicorn believers don’t worry about what the naysayers have to say. While the absence of what's Right can never engender belief, it can endanger it. If you give up on what's "True" in favor of what's Right, then you too will be able to experience the joy of life with the Unicorns.

...so what was I saying?

Oh yeah. I've actually been doing other things than watching DVDs and movies, but looking at the last few posts you'd never know that.

I've had a few really nice evenings out. After FF Ted, Allan & I went to Samarat, an Indian restaurant I've eaten at far too many times. I had a fine evening of taking the piss, and I'm sure the other two did too.

And as I was saying I went to an English style pub. A woman I know called Kazumi was having a birthday, so it was an occasion to get together with quite a few of the people I know in Tokyo. Met a couple of new people, too. The evening wasn't even dampened by it being "Poetry Nite" at the pub. This seemed to be a license for every gaijin hippy in west Tokyo to come and caterwaul on the tiny stage. A pity it wasn't "Mime Nite".

Then last night Mari's friend Kaoru had a birthday party. Totally scrumptious food and beer was had a place called TY Harbor Brewery (so natch the beer was good). It’s a pity that one has to keep one eye on the time for last train at an evening like last night.

Then last weekend my school had its Cultural Festival. This is like a school carnival, but there are more shows and performances by the kids. At least more than were ever done at my high school. Mari came along, which caused a minor stir among the students. I’m pretty much the only foreigner many of them have the chance to talk to, and so often things that I do take on a larger than life interest for them. For my Japanese girlfriend to come to the festival it was like a minor Hollywood celebrity had graced them with her presence. There were usually about 5 girls just standing to the side trying to get a look at Mari, and saying things like, “I can’t see her face”, and “She looks like a model”. When I left her alone for a minute, a braver girl immediately began asking her how old she was, are we married, where did we meet, etc.

It was all a bit much for poor Mari. I’d warned her that she was likely to generate some interest, but she wasn’t prepared to be scrutinized so much in public. It’s a strange feeling to be talked about by people (even 12 year olds) as if you’re not really there.

Simply Marvelous

Wow, time seems to be slipping by and there hasn't been an update for a while. Best rectify that.

Recently I’ve been watching heaps of DVDs. This has both a positive and a negative side. On the positive Mari and I finished Season 2 of Buffy. Our local DVD store only has seasons 1 and 2, so that’s it for the moment, but it was just as good the second time around.

And then there are the negatives, the biggest being The Punisher (2004). Could a movie be more still born? I even enjoyed Catwoman more than this. It was trying to be 6 different movies at once, and none of them was given fair treatment. The actors tried, but they had such a mixed bag of a story to work with that they couldn’t do anything. Surprisingly (and yet maybe not so) Punisher 2 has been announced.

Which made the Fantastic Four such a strange pleasure. Michael France was half of the screenwriting pair on both films, yet FF knew exactly what it wanted to be. It stayed short enough to tell its story without any padding, it had action, and best of all it was piss funny. I would describe it as a superhero comedy. If you take a sense of humour I think it really works.

The weather it is a changing, as the days are just a little warm and humid, but the nights are really pleasant. The air conditioner hasn’t been on for a couple of weeks and it’s that little bit darker in the morning when I get up at 6am.

Had a great night out with a few friends at an English-style pub…

Wait a minute. Last Action Hero is on TV! Back later. Maybe.
